About the NIFT Situation Test
The NIFT Situation Test is Stage 2 of the NIFT Entrance Examination for B.Des aspirants — the final qualifying round after candidates clear the written Stage 1 (CAT + GAT). NIFT typically calls around three candidates for every available B.Des seat to this round, making it a genuine filter rather than a formality.
In the test, candidates are given a problem statement and a limited set of materials, and must build a three-dimensional model within two hours, then write a short note explaining the concept. Examiners score material manipulation, originality, aesthetic appeal, neatness, conceptualisation and working methodology.
The Situation Test carries 20% weightage in the final NIFT merit score for B.Des candidates. M.Des, MFM and M.FTech applicants don't sit for this round — they instead face a Group Discussion and Personal Interview, which carries 30% weightage. Practice with a familiar, limited material set and steady time management are what separate a strong Situation Test from a rushed one.

NIFT Situation Test Pattern
The Situation Test is Stage 2 for B.Des candidates who've cleared the written CAT + GAT exam. Here's exactly how the two hours break down and what's being scored.
How the 2 Hours Break Down
- First 5 minutes: Read the problem statement and brainstorm ideas.
- Next 15 minutes: Sketch a rough design.
- Next 60 minutes: Build the model step by step.
- Final 30 minutes: Refine, clean up, and write the concept explanation.
What Examiners Score
- Material manipulation: How effectively and creatively the given materials are used.
- Originality: How unique and inventive the concept is.
- Aesthetic appeal: Visual balance and finish of the model.
- Neatness: Precision and clean construction.
- Conceptualisation: How well the theme has been understood and translated.
- Working methodology: Your approach to completing the task within the time limit.
Techniques Worth Drilling
- Paper folding & origami: for lightweight, intricate forms.
- Wire structuring: for abstract figures and frameworks.
- Clay modelling: for three-dimensional creativity.
- Thermocol & foam board work: for architectural and product-style forms.
Recurring Situation Test Themes
- Sustainable design
- Futuristic objects
- Interior layouts
- Fashion accessories
- Social-awareness concepts
If You're Applying for M.Des / MFM / M.FTech
- No Situation Test — postgraduate candidates instead face a Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI), usually in May at the NIFT Delhi campus, carrying 30% weightage.
What Toppers Actually Carry vs. What Every List Tells You
NIFT supplies all materials at the centre — candidates aren't permitted to bring their own. Students who clear the Situation Test consistently rehearse with a short, familiar kit close to what's actually provided. Most coaching checklists run far longer than they need to.
The Long List Most Institutes Hand You
- Multiple paper varieties — chart, handmade, foil sheets
- Thermocol sheets and blocks
- Corrugated boards and cardboards
- Fabrics, ribbons, yarns and threads
- Beads, glitter and sequins
- An assortment of tapes and paints
The Working Kit That Actually Clears the Test
- Mount board or thick cardboard for structure
- One neutral chart paper — white or brown
- Two to three colour paper sheets
- Fevicol or white glue
- Scissors or a paper cutter
- Pencil, black marker, thread or jute string
Fewer, familiar materials mean less panic and more time spent on concept and construction — exactly what examiners are scoring. Delhi NCR students have it easiest: most of this kit is available off-the-shelf in Sadar Bazaar.
About the Final NIFT Result
Final NIFT merit combines your Stage 1 written score with your Stage 2 Situation Test (or GD/PI for PG programs) score, declared on the official NTA NIFT portal. Because the Situation Test carries 20% weightage, a strong written rank can still slip if the practical round is under-prepared — which is exactly the round BRDS coaching targets.
BRDS Success Story
BRDS has consistently produced outstanding results in NIFT admissions. With 2,393 students selected in NIFT 2026 — including 85 in the Top 100 — and a total of 16,780 NIFT selections since 2005, BRDS remains India's highest result-producing coaching institute for NIFT. Our Situation Test–specific coaching, expert NIFT alumni faculty, and hands-on material practice have helped thousands of students convert a written pass into a final seat.
